ABILITY - PURPOSE - WELL BEING
A place where an individual’s “sense of purpose’ is fulfilled by focusing on their abilities. Allowing those with communication barriers to ‘have a voice’ and choice in their day, whilst encouraging them to try new things. Prioritising overall well-being.
OUR ANIMALS
Here at The Stockyard Farm we also try to make a difference in the lives of neglected/unwanted animals.
Our animals are free to roam around the property and live out their years surrounded with love, nature and nurture. Our animals also play a vital role in our programs and the overall biodiversity of the farm.
ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT / FOCUS
"Don't ever underestimate the mark you can leave on the world with gentle footprints."
We try to do our part in the following areas and are always looking at ways to improve our environmental impact-
Recycling- We collect and recycle a number of products including- Jars, plant pots, egg cartons, baby formula tins and more.
We try to use only recycled or recyclable materials in our programs and promote Eco friendly choices.
Sustainability- We are in the development stage of creating a property that is set up with an emphasis on becoming a self sufficient farm. We are forever learning the impacts of biodiversity and figuring out how to create an environment that is balanced, healthy and alive!
OUR STORY
How it all started..
The Stockyard farm was brought to life when my sister Sarah and I sat down one night, after I had completed a 'person centred planning' training course.
I remember using a tool in the course that was created to help envision 'what your life would look like if you had no limitations'. This tool was developed for both self evaluation and to help the individuals we supported at Giant Steps.
It was this tool that encouraged us to take our first steps into turning this 'dream' into a reality.
Nicole’s ‘why’....
“A place where I can unite my two passions! Farm life and Support work’.
My journey into support work began in my teenage years. My partner at the time had a younger brother, Abraham, who was born with Down syndrome. Abraham and I instantly connected, and he inspired my path in life. To this day, I am grateful for the direction he gave me.
In 2010, I began working at Giant Steps Sydney, a school for children with autism. My time there was transformative, expanding my knowledge and deepening my passion for this field.
In 2014, I transitioned to what is now known as Adult Autism Services Giant Steps, where I worked with young adults (ages 18-30) living with autism. It quickly became clear that there was a need for a safe, welcoming community space, away from the hustle and bustle of city life. This realisation planted the seed for what would become The Stockyard Farm—a place where farm life could naturally cater to the needs of these individuals.
Love for Farm Life
Born and raised in Sydney, I always harbored dreams of farm life. The allure of animals, fresh air, and open spaces captivated me from a young age. As a child, I spent countless hours at the old showgrounds in Moore Park, cleaning stables and grooming horses. The joy and fulfillment I found there were priceless, far beyond any monetary reward.
My twin sister shared this dream and passion. She traveled the world, volunteered in Cambodia, studied permaculture, and eventually lived on a farm near Maitland for three years. Her experiences gave us both a taste of our shared dream.
Life progressed, and I got married and had children, all while holding onto the vision of farm life. My sister’s journey reinforced our commitment, and together, we embarked on creating The Stockyard Farm.
The Stockyard Farm Journey Begins
The Stockyard Farm was born from a blend of my passion for support work and a lifelong dream of farm life. It's a sanctuary where individuals can feel safe, welcome, and part of a community—away from the distractions of city life. Here, we nurture both people and animals, creating a harmonious environment where everyone can thrive.
Welcome to The Stockyard Farm.
Sarah’s “Why” …….
Hi, my name is Sarah and here is a little about my ‘why’:
My purpose and focus in the stockyard is to provide the younger generation with the skills and education that will assist and prepare them for a transition into a more sustainable way of life.
With a goal to empower each individual with the ability to provide for themselves. To attain a sense of fulfilment and self-security. No longer feeling reliant /dependant on the current vulnerable resources that we need to live a happy healthy life.
Able to provide for themselves the following:
-Food
-Shelter
-Water
-Health
and Happiness.
All whilst bettering themselves and the world around them. ☺
‘A place to reconnect with the natural environment.’
